WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Sha'ar HaKavanot / Pri Etz Chaim practical terminology

This introduction begins with a direct technical identification: כל תפילה היא בעולם העשייה מלכות דעשייה. It then reads תפלה לעני, ואני תפלה, and ואשפוך את נפשי through Malkhut and nefesh. The parenthetical ס״א preserves an alternate formulation. The lesson reports how this Pri Etz Chaim passage interprets prayer; it does not replace the peshat of the quoted verses.

READING

Pedagogical reading guide

Pri Etz Chaim frames prayer through Malkhut of Asiyah and explains its language through poverty, request, soul, and pouring out.
MEANING

Lurianic Hebrew and Aramaic

technical identification → Psalm 102:1 → Malkhut asks from ז״א → ואני תפלה sign → prayer as שפיכת נפש → [ס״א alternate explanation]

EXAMPLES

Examples supplied by the approved curriculum.

Close translation — ‘Every prayer is in the world of Asiyah, the Malkhut of Asiyah, as it is written, “A prayer of the poor man when he is faint.” She is the poor and needy Malkhut who asks and prays from Ze'ir Anpin, her husband, that he give her what she lacks. A sign is “and I am prayer,” for “I” is Malkhut. Therefore every expression of prayer in Torah is mentioned as an outpouring of soul, either Malkhut of Atzilut or the world of Asiyah, for both are called nefesh.’

Learning objective

Read practical prayer terminology while distinguishing the liturgical act, its symbolic configuration, and the verses adduced by the source.

Technical parsing

Hebrew technical prose with Aramaic construct phrases, acronyms כמ״ש / ז״א / בחי׳ / וז״ש / ס״א, and a preserved parenthetical variant.

Practice

Identify the initial technical proposition, three quoted verse phrases, the antecedent of היא, and the function of the parenthetical ס״א.

Answer key

Proposition: כל תפילה היא בעולם העשייה מלכות דעשייה. Quotations: תפלה לעני כי יעטוף; ואני תפלה; ואשפוך את נפשי לפני ה׳. היא refers to המלכות דלה ועניה. ס״א introduces an alternate version, which explains תפילה as שיחה and repeats the Malkhut/Ze'ir Anpin relation.
