Question/reference vocabulary

The Gemara's questions become easier when the interrogative or demonstrative is recognized before the rest of the sentence. מאי asks what; מאן who; היכא where; היכי how; הני points to “these.” Attached forms such as ליה, להו, לן identify the person receiving or related to an action. The lesson repeatedly asks only one structural question: what person, thing, place, or manner is this word pointing to?
