WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Recurring opening reader

The unit begins תא חזי and states that no one can know the human soul directly—preserving (נ״א לא אית), an alternate reading—but it becomes known through the body’s limbs. בגין כך summarizes the paradox: it is known and not known. The passage then applies the analogy to the Holy One, blessed be He, described as נשמתא לנשמתא רוחא לרוחא and known through gates or openings.

EXAMPLES

Close translation — ‘Come and see: concerning a human being’s soul, there is no one [alternate: there is not one] who can know it, except through these limbs of the body, which are the levels that perform the soul’s craft; therefore it is known and not known. So the Holy One, blessed be He, is known and not known, because He is soul to soul, spirit to spirit, hidden and concealed from all; but through those gates that are openings to the soul, the Holy One, blessed be He, is known.’

Learning objective

Read a תא חזי opening through a complete analogy while preserving a printed alternate reading.

Language analysis

Zoharic Aramaic exposition with an exact printed variant, causal connectors, a כך analogy, and paired passive forms אתידע / לא אתידע.

Practice

Mark the opening, the alternate reading, the two בגין clauses, the analogy marker כך, and both sides of אתידע ולא אתידע. What mediates knowledge in each half?

Answer key

Opening: תא חזי. Variant: (נ״א לא אית). The limbs mediate knowledge of the human soul; the gates/openings mediate knowledge of the Holy One, blessed be He. בגין כך gives the first summary; בגין דאיהו introduces the divine description. Both halves retain known/not-known tension.
