WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Cross-reference literacy

The first note is Tosafot on Berakhot 12b. It cites ירושלמי (ברכות א ה) and commands ועיין בו ותמצא הכל—consult it and you will find the full set of correspondences. The second is Rashi on Berakhot 2a: כדיליף לקמן (עמוד ב)—as is derived later, on side b. These are real navigation instructions. לקמן is relative to the commentator’s location, while a tractate/chapter reference identifies another source directly.

APPROVED STUDY LAYERS

Source-specific guidance from the curriculum.

Learning objective

Follow an external source reference and an internal later-location reference, then return to the original comment.

Language and layout

The first note uses an imperative עיין with a named external corpus; the second uses לקמן with a local page-side locator. Both are exact readings from the Vilna-edition transcriptions.

Practice

Identify the navigation verb, the external source label, and the internal direction word. Which reference requires leaving the Bavli commentary, and which stays within the nearby sugya?

Answer key

Navigation verb: עיין. External label: ירושלמי (ברכות א ה), which requires opening the Jerusalem Talmud. Internal direction: לקמן (עמוד ב), which moves later to side b of the nearby Bavli discussion. Return anchors: Tosafot s.v. בקשו לקבוע and Rashi s.v. משעת צאת הכוכבים.

Source notes

Primary editions: Vilna Edition for Tosafot and Vilna Edition for Rashi; both Public Domain.

REMEMBER

A cross-reference has an origin, a target, and a return point.
