WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Torah law reader

This unit is structured law, not a loose collection of vocabulary. זָכוֹר gives the positive command; שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד states the work pattern; לֹא־תַעֲשֶׂה כָל־מְלָאכָה gives the prohibition; verse 11 supplies the creation rationale. The list after אַתָּה extends the prohibition through household, servant, animal, and resident sojourner.

EXAMPLES

Close translation — ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to sanctify it. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to Hashem your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son, your daughter, your male servant, your female servant, your animal, or your sojourner within your gates. For in six days Hashem made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Hashem blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it.’
