WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Court, decree, dream, and wisdom language

Daniel’s dream narrative clusters חֶלְמָא, פִשְׁרָא, רָזָא, and חָכְמְתָא. Royal administration uses טְעֵם for an order or command. Ezra 4:17 opens a reply with פִּתְגָמָא, the word/message being sent. The English gloss changes with genre; the Aramaic form and citation remain stable.

Learning objective

Build a court, dream, and document vocabulary from exact occurrences while preserving context-sensitive meanings.

Morphology and syntax

The displayed forms are noun tokens with state and gender recorded in OSHB; the learner-facing grouping is semantic, not a claim that all have identical morphology.

Dialect boundary

Biblical Aramaic of Daniel and Ezra. Later Targumic, Jewish Babylonian, and Zoharic forms are not imported into this lesson.

Practice

Group the vocabulary by dream interpretation, wisdom, and administration. Translate טְעֵם and פִּתְגָמָא in their cited clauses rather than from one fixed gloss.

Answer key

Dream interpretation: חֶלְמָא, פִשְׁרָא, רָזָא. Wisdom: חָכְמְתָא. Administration: טְעֵם ‘command/order’ in Daniel 3:10; פִּתְגָמָא ‘message/word’ in Ezra 4:17.

Source notes

MAM reads רָזָא in Daniel 2:18; OSHB/WLC reads רָזָה. The lesson follows MAM and records the witness difference rather than silently harmonizing it.

REMEMBER

Genre helps select the English gloss.
