WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
Participles
Participles present an action as ongoing or characteristic. אָמְרִין is an active masculine plural participle, ‘saying.’ מִתְקַטְּלִין is a masculine plural derived-stem participle, ‘being killed.’ In חָזֵה הֲוֵית, the participle precedes a perfect form of הוה, producing the contextual sense ‘I was seeing.’ Do not translate the participle before reading its clause.

Learning objective
Recognize participles in active and derived-stem uses, including a participle with הוה that creates a past progressive expression.
Morphology and syntax
OSHB: אָמְרִין AVqrmpa; מִתְקַטְּלִין AVMrmpa; חָזֵה AVqrmsa + הֲוֵית AVqp1cs.
Dialect boundary
Biblical Aramaic of Daniel and Ezra. Later Targumic, Jewish Babylonian, and Zoharic forms are not imported into this lesson.
Practice
Identify the number of אָמְרִין and מִתְקַטְּלִין. In חָזֵה הֲוֵית, which word carries the seeing action and which locates it in past discourse?
Answer key
Both plural forms are masculine plural. חָזֵה carries the lexical action ‘seeing’; הֲוֵית is the 1cs perfect of הוה and places the participial action in past discourse.
Source notes
The derived-stem label is kept descriptive on the learner card; the full OSHB code remains in the evidence.
