WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
לא קשיא resolution reader
The passage first challenges with אִינִי? and a statement of Rabbi Yitzḥak. The resolution לָא קַשְׁיָא does not mean ‘ignore the problem’; it asserts that the cases differ. The first distinction is personal matters versus matters of Heaven. The next proposal keeps both in matters of Heaven but distinguishes whether the wicked person’s hour is favorable.

Close translation of the resolutions — ‘It is not difficult: this concerns his own matters; that concerns matters of Heaven. And if you wish, say: both concern matters of Heaven, and it is not difficult: this concerns a wicked person whose hour is favorable; that concerns a wicked person whose hour is not favorable.’

Learning objective
Read לא קשיא as a claim that two sources govern different cases, then identify each distinguishing variable.
Discourse analysis
JBA discourse formulas: איני challenge; לא קשיא resolution; הא...הא case distinction; ואיבעית אימא alternative resolution. The embedded Rabbi Yitzḥak statement and verses are Hebrew.
Practice
State the variable in the first הא...הא resolution and the variable in the second. What does ואיבעית אימא signal?
Answer key
First variable: personal matters versus matters of Heaven. Second: whether the wicked person currently enjoys favorable fortune. ואיבעית אימא introduces an alternative answer, not an additional premise required by the first.
