WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Proof and objection reader

The unit opens וּרְמִינְהוּ, setting a tannaitic source against the position under discussion. After quoting the source, the Gemara asks מַאי וְאוֹמֵר—what does the additional verse contribute? It anticipates an answer with וְכִי תֵימָא and rejects it with תָּא שְׁמַע. Read the discourse markers before attempting the long quotation.

Learning objective

Identify challenge, local question, anticipated objection, and proof text in a short Bavli sequence.

Discourse analysis

Jewish Babylonian Aramaic framing surrounds a Hebrew tannaitic quotation and biblical citations. Language changes within the unit are preserved rather than relabeled as uniform JBA.

Practice

Bracket the quoted tannaitic material. Label ורמינהו, מאי ואומר, וכי תימא, and תא שמע by function. Which biblical wording is used to answer the anticipated objection?

Answer key

ורמינהו raises the contradiction; מאי ואומר asks why a second verse is cited; וכי תימא anticipates a possible answer; תא שמע introduces the decisive proof. The answer cites והיו לנו הלילה משמר והיום מלאכה.
