WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Onkelos narrative paragraph

This reader uses the same bounded unit as the Biblical Hebrew narrative reader, but it does not assume word-for-word identity. אִיזֵיל לָךְ renders לֶךְ־לְךָ; לְעַם סַגִּי renders לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל; בְּדִילָךְ makes the mediating sense of בְךָ explicit. The learner first reads Onkelos as Aramaic, then compares it with the Hebrew.

Learning objective

Read an exact Onkelos paragraph alongside its Hebrew source while identifying what is close rendering and what is an interpretive lexical choice.

Dialect and grammar

Targumic Aramaic. The paragraph includes Peal imperatives, first-person promise forms with object suffixes, emphatic nouns, and the relative particle דְּ.

Practice

Match אִיזֵיל, אַרְעָךְ, עַם סַגִּי, וַאֲרַבֵּי, and בְּדִילָךְ to their Hebrew source expressions. Identify one place where Onkelos clarifies rather than merely copies.

Answer key

אִיזֵיל ↔ לֶךְ; אַרְעָךְ ↔ אַרְצְךָ; עַם סַגִּי ↔ גּוֹי גָּדוֹל; וַאֲרַבֵּי ↔ וַאֲגַדְּלָה; בְּדִילָךְ ↔ בְךָ. בְּדִילָךְ explicitly expresses ‘through/on account of you,’ a clarifying lexical choice.
