WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

A dispute formula reader

The Mishnah first states that the Exodus is mentioned at night. Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah credits Ben Zoma’s exposition of יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ and כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ. The Sages agree on the verse but assign the two phrases differently. The reader’s task is to map each speaker to each inference.

READING

Pedagogical reading guide

Mishnah Berakhot 1:5: Ben Zoma’s derivation and the Sages’ alternative reading.
MEANING

Hebrew

opening rule → Rabbi Elazar’s report → citation → Ben Zoma’s two-part inference → Sages’ two-part alternative

EXAMPLES

Examples supplied by the approved curriculum.

Close translation — ‘The Exodus from Egypt is mentioned at night. Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah said: I am like a man of seventy years, yet I did not merit to have the Exodus said at night until Ben Zoma expounded it ... “the days of your life” means the days; “all the days of your life” includes the nights. The Sages say: “the days of your life” means this world; “all the days of your life” includes the days of the Messiah.’

APPROVED STUDY LAYERS

Source-specific guidance from the curriculum.

Learning objective

Identify a named teaching, a scriptural proof, the disputed interpretive units, and the Sages’ alternative.

Language and syntax

Rabbinic Hebrew dispute and citation syntax. שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר introduces the verse; עַד שֶׁדְּרָשָׁהּ marks the decisive exposition; וַחֲכָמִים אוֹמְרִים opens the alternative.

Practice

Build a two-column table for Ben Zoma and the Sages. What does each derive from יְמֵי and from כֹּל יְמֵי?

Answer key

Ben Zoma: יְמֵי = days; כֹּל יְמֵי = nights. Sages: יְמֵי = this world; כֹּל יְמֵי = the messianic era.

Source notes

Torat Emet 357 is the exact displayed witness. Parenthetical biblical references are retained in the source data; the lesson hero preserves the textual wording.

REMEMBER

Do not merge speakers who cite the same verse differently.
