Plain meaningJob 1:20–22: Job mourns, worships, speaks, and is judged not to have sinned with his lips.

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Job reader

Verse 20 gives five sequential actions. Verse 21 balances עָרֹם יָצָתִי with וְעָרֹם אָשׁוּב, then יְהוָה נָתַן with וַיהוָה לָקָח. Verse 22 supplies the narrator’s evaluation. Because MAM and OSHB/WLC differ in the spelling of יָצָתִי/יָצָאתִי, this reader names the difference rather than silently choosing a hybrid.

Hashem gave and Hashem took; may the name of Hashem be blessed. In all this Job did not sin and did not ascribe impropriety to God.’

Learning objective

Read compact Joban prose-poetry while tracking action sequence, paired clauses, and an explicit textual witness difference.

Morphology and syntax

OSHB independently analyzes the wayyiqtol action chain and the first-person perfect/imperfect forms; its token reflects the WLC spelling יָצָאתִי.

Practice

List the five actions in verse 20. Match the two balanced pairs in verse 21. State the exact MAM/OSHB spelling difference.

Answer key

Source notes

Displayed text follows MAM, including יָצָתִי. OSHB/WLC has יָצָאתִי. The difference is consonantal and is preserved in the evidence record.

REMEMBER

A witness difference must be named, not normalized away.
