WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Daniel 7 vision reader

Vision prose uses familiar grammar with less familiar nouns. In חָזֵה הֲוֵית, the participle plus הוה produces ‘I was seeing.’ Verse 3 introduces four great beasts with feminine plural סָלְקָן and שָׁנְיָן. Verse 4 follows the first beast through a sequence of passive and causative forms. Rare symbols are glossed; the recurring grammar receives the learner’s attention.

Source-specific guidance from the curriculum.

Learning objective

Read a bounded vision passage, distinguishing the progressive seeing formula, plural descriptive forms, and symbolic vocabulary.

Morphology and syntax

MAM supplies the reading text; OSHB identifies חָזֵה as a participle, הֲוֵית as Peal perfect 1cs, and the plural descriptive forms.

Dialect boundary

Biblical Aramaic of Daniel and Ezra. Later Targumic, Jewish Babylonian, and Zoharic forms are not imported into this lesson.

Practice

Find the participle + הוה construction, the two feminine plural verbs in verse 3, and the two phrases comparing the beast to a lion and a human.

Answer key

Participle + הוה: חָזֵה הֲוֵית. Feminine plural verbs: סָלְקָן and שָׁנְיָן. Comparisons: כְאַרְיֵה and כֶּאֱנָשׁ.

Source notes

MAM reads גַפַּהּ in Daniel 7:4; OSHB/WLC reads גַפַּיהּ. The lesson follows MAM and records the variant rather than combining the witnesses.

REMEMBER

Gloss rare symbols, but parse the recurring grammar yourself.
