WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

Citation and Midrash vocabulary

Midrashic and tannaitic exegesis has its own road signs. שנאמר introduces a quotation; תלמוד לומר uses scriptural wording as an answer; דבר אחר opens another interpretation; יכול proposes a possible reading; מכאן draws an inference; וכן הוא אומר brings a supporting verse. Learning these as phrase units lets the reader follow the interpretive movement even when a quoted verse contains unfamiliar vocabulary.
