WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In many common pronunciations today, Alef itself may sound quiet, and the vowel attached to it is often what you hear most clearly. That does not make Alef optional: it is a real written consonant and must be recognized wherever it appears. Keep it visually distinct from ע, Ayin, even in communities where the two are not strongly distinguished in everyday pronunciation.
